Producing Lengthy Reports for Less!

June 20th, 2011

CHALLENGE Idealware is a nonprofit organization dedicated to researching and evaluating software for the nonprofit community. Once or twice a year they compile a comprehensive review of open source (free) Content Management Systems (CMS) that enable organizations to modify website content inhouse. The 82-page report compares WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and Plone.

FULL DECK DESIGN PARTICIPATION FDD’s expertise with layout software Adobe Indesign helps reduce report production time. Master page templates with page numbers, footers and page text boxes ensure consistent positioning and automatic page numbering. The table of contents was generated automatically with page header and subheader levels. The complicated charts were easy to duplicate using chart styles. Because the final report will be printed in hard copy as well as posted online as a PDF, image files were converted printable format and resolution verified. By the way, if your organization is considering a CMS for your website, this report is a must read.

Holiday Spirits!

June 18th, 2011

BEER CHALLENGE Halftime has the world’s largest selection of beer. Owner Alan Daniels is constantly developing new ways to market to customers who come to his store or his successful website. One thing that sets his store apart from others is that he encourages people to grab an empty six-pack holder and fill it with any 6 beers they want.

FULL DECK DESIGN BEER SOLUTION Beer is fun, and we had some developing this 30-foot wide wall banner to familiarize store customers with the Mix Six concept.

WINE CHALLENGE Dutchess Wine is in the same plaza as Halftime. What could be more convenient? Owner Alain Urbani has organized his store by food type making it easy for customers to choose the best wine to go with their meal.

FULL DECK DESIGN WINE SOLUTION Wine is fun, too! A cow talking to a fish? Makes it perfectly clear that Dutchess Wine will help you pair the perfect wine for the perfect meal.

December is a time for toasts. Halftime and Dutchess Wine at 2290 South Road in Poughkeepsie have all the holiday spirits you’ll need. Their holiday baskets are the ideal gift!

A Professionally Designed Brochure Might Lead to Increased Donations

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Blue Belt Janicik, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization with the goal of promoting bicycle safety and awareness to cyclists and motorists across the U.S. The organization was founded by Colleen Janicik whose son was tragically killed in a bike crash. Blue Belt’s brochure lacked visual appeal and didn’t present information clearly.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTION Blue Belt’s bike safety goals are immediately conveyed with a full-size cover image of a bicyclist riding on a country road and three smaller images that highlight bike safety rules. Blue Belt’s mission and donation information are prominently displayed on the foldover panel. On the inside, bright colors and photographs reinforce safety facts. Full Deck extended usability by adding a mailing panel on the back. Most importantly, the brochure conveys a sense of professionalism that will hopefully translate into increased donations for this worthy cause.

A Solution for Companies that Update Site Content Frequently

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Hudson Valley Mercantile is a monthly publication highlighting local events, businesses, places and faces throughout the Hudson Valley. They wanted a website where people could quickly find out what was going on and where. The content would change on a monthly basis matching the print version. In addition, they wanted their regular columnists to have blogs within the site.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTION Hudson Valley Mercantile is known for covers that feature the work of local artists, so we created a mosaic from different sky images silhouetted the Catskill mountain range. The entire site was created using free open source WordPress software. Originally developed as a blogging software, WordPress allows users to easily add content via internet browser. It enabled blogger-columnists to post blogs but restricted accessibility to their blog areas. The calendar is updated and categorized automatically from a spreadsheet file.

Direct Mail is Far From Dead!

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE The Millbrook Independent is a weekly local newspaper with an expanding territory and talented staff. Publisher Stephen Kaye wanted to increase the subscriber base and let people know that the paper covers more than Millbrook.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTION A dynamic public relations duo Bang + Collins hired Full Deck to design a flyer based on the concept of using headlines from the newspaper. Direct mail has seen a big decline over the past couple of years because companies have been using cheaper online marketing techniques. That means it’s time to go back to it! You can’t mail just anything and be guaranteed success, you have to give people a compelling reason to read your piece. I encouraged TMI to give away the first few issues for free as a way to entice customers, and that gave me the idea for the headline, “Publisher temporarily loses mind, gives paper away for free.” Mr. Kaye has a sense of humor, so he went with the idea…and it worked! The flyer increased subscriptions by a whopping 12%!

Does Your Website Look Hacked Together?

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Water Without Borders helps people get clean drinking water all over the world. To save money, they had volunteers and board members handle their website. As a result, the pages didn’t have a consistent design sometimes giving viewers the false impression that they’d left WWB’s site. The varying designs also made it difficult to get information about their projects.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTIONS To immediately establish WWB’s mission, Full Deck put the jarring statistic “Nearly 1 billion people don’t have clean drinking water” in oversized type inside a circle of water being held by a group of multiethnic hands. A clear, consistent secondary navigation bar makes it easy for viewers to explore the wealth of information on the site. To add visual impact to every web page, we selected the most eye-catching images from their archives; photo animations were created to illustrate their most developed projects. An easy-to-use WordPress blog was installed within the site for staff members to post news about the latest events and fundraising efforts. Embedding a blog has the added benefit of prompting search engines to reread a site with every post. WWB is hosting their Second Annual Walk for Water and Dash for Splash, a kids’ fun run on Saturday, October 2 at 10 am at 78 Stringham Road in LaGrange. Join them if you can!

Does Your Website Reflect Your Business?

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Cindy M. Smith, CPA, P.C. is an accounting firm representing individuals, businesses, families, trusts, joint ventures and nonprofit organizations throughout Dutchess County. The content and organization of her old website did not reflect her diligent work ethic or the different kinds of clients she represents. And, the look of the site simply did not capture her warm personality.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTION Accounting and tax preparation are often stressful tasks that many prefer to have as little to do with as possible. Cindy loves her work and simply lights up when she talks about accounting. Her impressive knowledge of financial matters and the easy way she has of explaining them puts clients at ease. To make that immediately visible, Full Deck developed the tagline, “Relax…Cindy’s got you covered” and reinforced the concept by placing an image of someone relaxing on every page in the site. We expanded the site to include a page for each type of client she represents, so when a new client enters her site they can quickly find information that’s relevant to them. Smith’s professional credentials are front and center on the site’s masthead. (I was so impressed with Cindy, I hired her to handle my tax prep!)

Developing a Brand for an Annual Event Can Save Big Money

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Art Studio Views is an open studio tour event organized by participating artists in the Rhinebeck area. The tour is held annually on Labor Day weekend, but artists and organizers vary from year to year.

FULL DECK DESIGN IDEAS The first year Full Deck was involved, we designed the complete ASV brand based on vibrant colors and dynamic shapes. This year we were able to reduce our time by more than half by limiting design changes to moving colors around and using last year’s files as templates for all print and web materials. Having the brand already established also freed up time for the organizers. This year’s tour is coming up soon! See some inspirational art and get a behind-the-scenes look at artists in their studios September 4th and 5th.

HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? If your organization holds an annual event, consider developing a brand that will last for several years. Give us a call at 845-266-3852 or email us to see what ideas we might have your next gala or special event.

Brochures That Get The Most Bang For Your Buck

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Rhinebeck Department Store owner Barbara Schreiber wanted to distribute a brochure through Dutchess County Tourism for the upcoming summer/fall tourist season.

FULL DECK DESIGN SOLUTION To maximize the brochure’s utility, Full Deck recommended a letter-sized, tri-fold brochure as it can be mailed with a regular stamp or slipped into a brochure rack. Once the printable version was finished, we created a PDF with active links for the Dutchess County Tourism website. Full Deck’s design highlighted the store’s attention to detail by photographing a corner detail of the well-known brick façade for the brochure cover. To test its success, we included a coupon redeemable when the brochure is presented at the store.

Do Guests Keep Your Gala Book?

June 18th, 2011

CHALLENGE Previously, budget restrictions forced the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to compile their Gala Book inhouse using word processing software. Short staffing inevitably made this a project carried out in a last-minute frenzy without benefit of design advice.

FULL DECK DESIGN IDEAS As part of its philosophy to give back to the community, Full Deck offered to help the struggling JDRF with their 2010 gala materials. We suggested they reconsider their whole approach to the Gala Book. We felt the book should be something gala attendees wanted to take home as a keepsake instead of leaving it behind on the dinner table. Full Deck organized the entire flow of the book to showcase JDRF. We developed a four-page centerfold insert highlighting JDRF key advances and partnership programs that could be reprinted later as a separate marketing piece. Brief callouts featuring JDRF fundraising programs and research programs were included throughout the auction listing. Support ads were tastefully grouped together and care was taken to ensure good print quality. Of course, the book looked beautiful, too!
